The 18th edition of the Dubai International Food Safety Conference has commenced at the Dubai World Trade Centre, gathering over 3,000 food safety experts and specialists from across the world. This year's theme, "Future Foresight in Food Safety," emphasizes the importance of proactive approaches to tackling emerging global food safety challenges and the urgent need for innovative and sustainable solutions to secure the future of global food systems. The event will run until October 23.
In his opening address, His Excellency Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality, stressed the importance of agility and adaptability in dealing with technological advancements. He highlighted how leveraging these innovations can maximize opportunities, enabling a more robust approach to confronting challenges such as climate change, changes in food manufacturing, and shifting consumer behaviors.
Al Hajri stated, "The Dubai International Food Safety Conference has earned a prestigious global reputation as a vital platform for experts, research institutions, and organizations to exchange knowledge and ideas in food safety. Its success underlines Dubai's leadership in shaping the future of food both regionally and globally."
He further emphasized the importance of continually advancing technologies and integrating them into regulatory systems to improve the ability to foresee potential risks. These technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI) and big data analytics, can help mitigate risks and provide scientific, sustainable solutions for safeguarding communities.
This year's conference also aligns with World Food Day, and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations has officially recognized the Dubai International Food Safety Conference as part of the global celebration. This alignment with the theme "Future Foresight in Food Safety" highlights the need for unity and collective efforts to create a secure and fair food future for all.
Dr. Kayan Akram Jaff, Head of Mission for the FAO Sub-regional Office for the Gulf Cooperation Council States and Yemen, spoke on the significance of the conference. "The global food sector is facing significant threats to food safety and its ability to adapt to rapid changes. It is essential that we work together to innovate solutions that will enhance our capacity to foresee future challenges and address them. Events like the Dubai International Food Safety Conference play a critical role in bringing together the global community to exchange knowledge and devise solutions to these pressing issues."
In his keynote speech, "From Farm to Table: Building Sustainable Food Systems for the Future," Dr. Jaff outlined the role of international organizations in creating sustainable food systems capable of overcoming the sector's challenges. He also explored the importance of collaboration and foresight in ensuring food security in the coming decades.
Throughout the conference, a series of sessions and workshops will be held, focusing on forward-thinking strategies to safeguard global food safety. These sessions will explore a wide range of topics, including innovations in food safety technology, sustainable nutrition, genetically modified foods, and advances in food testing technologies. Experts from various disciplines are participating to discuss future solutions that can ensure a sustainable and safe global food supply.
One of the key sessions organized in partnership with the Dubai Future Foundation is designed to foster innovative thinking, offering participants insights into how creative solutions can help address food security challenges. Other focal points of the conference include food safety in transportation and logistics, crisis management in the food sector, and the future of food safety training.
The conference also pays special attention to the next generation of food safety leaders. A dedicated program for students and young researchers has been established, providing them with a platform to present their work and engage with seasoned professionals in the field. The program includes scientific poster presentations, workshops, and educational seminars, all aimed at raising awareness of the critical role food safety plays in global health and sustainability. This initiative also underscores the importance of involving youth in shaping the future of food safety.
The Dubai International Food Safety Conference, organized annually by Dubai Municipality, has cemented its position as a leading platform for global experts to share knowledge, develop innovative solutions, and discuss strategies for building a more secure, sustainable, and resilient food future.
